Day twelve and thirteen – Santona to Guemes and Guemes to Santander

Thursday 31 May 2018

We left Santona with quite overcast conditions and although the countryside was still very beautiful not so good for photographs. From Santona to Guemes was not too difficult being 22 kms and only an elevation of 340 metres but we both suffered with our feet today.  The first part of the day flew by and we passed some lovely small towns along the way. Unfortunately the last few kilometres seemed to take forever.

The Guemes Albergue is run by an 80 year old priest whose great grandparents built the original part of the building and he was born here. It is a lovely Albergue with a large meeting room where Father Ernesto told us of the history of the place.

Dinner and breakfast was shared before venturing out on a very wet morning but only a short 11 kms to the ferry for Santander.

Wet and weary Pilgrims boarding the ferry.

Jorge and Silke were leaving to return to Germany and work the next day so a night of farewells and celebrations were ahead.

Silke, Jorge and Hannah (Ron’s Flunkball partner) cuddling a lobster.

We stayed in a nice Pension in Santander instead of an Albergue – pure luxury with a bath tub as well. We booked two nights for a rest day and meant to do s bit of sightseeing but that didn’t happen as we slept, washed and tended our blisters etc.

Tomorrow is a long stage of over 35 kms so will shorten it by taking a bus out of town as it is said to be pretty boring to get to the outskirts of the city.

It’s just the name of the game. If you don’t have a ball, which they didn’t they just use anything, a boot, bottle, can.
